A Midnight Christmas Waltz by Collette Cameron in 360

Updated: 6 days ago

Recently, I had the privilege of bringing a scene from Collette Cameron’s enchanting regency romance to life. As a USA Today Bestselling Author known for her richly detailed and emotionally resonant stories, Collette's work provided the perfect inspiration for a VR experience. It was truly an honor to collaborate with her and contribute to sharing her world in a whole new way.

The Vision

The story's setting—a grand Christmas Eve ball in Cumberland, England in 1792—called for a space that reflected elegance and warmth. Collette envisioned a golden ballroom with Regency-era elements: glittering patterns on ivory walls, an ornate fireplace, and crystal chandeliers glowing softly. The idea was to create a space that complemented the narration and amplified the emotions of the scene, allowing users to feel as though they were among the guests, absorbing the atmosphere of love, magic, and anticipation.

The Challenges

Creating this space in Unreal Engine was no small feat. The first challenge was achieving the right lighting to evoke a festive, candlelit ambiance without overwhelming the delicate features of the room. The reflections, particularly on gilded surfaces, had to be balanced carefully, requiring meticulous control over light properties. Another hurdle was reducing material flickering during camera movement, ensuring the environment felt smooth and immersive.

Each design decision, from the placement of the fireplace to the color of the walls, had to align with the story’s tone while maintaining historical accuracy. These details were critical in making the environment feel authentic and emotionally engaging.

The Journey

The project took three weeks, from concept moodboards to the final rendered environment. It was a process of iteration: experimenting with textures, tweaking lighting angles, and testing animations to create a seamless experience. The most rewarding moment came when the ballroom came alive in VR—when stepping into the space felt like stepping into Collette’s story.

Takeaways

As we prepare this experience for publication on Meta TV for dedicated VR users, my goal is to allow fans of Collette Cameron to experience her story in an experiential way that traditional mediums cannot replicate.

For me, this journey reinforced the potential of VR to revolutionize storytelling. By placing readers in the world of a story, we can foster deeper emotional connections and amplify the impact of the narrative.

This ballroom is just the beginning—a step toward making XR a meaningful space for authors, storytellers, and dreamers alike.
